Commentaire: Much loved, multiple award winning national treasure Stephen Fry published the first volume of his autobiography back in 1997. The typically candid 'Moab is My Washpot' covered the eventful first 20 years of his life and won a huge readership. 13 years later, he unleashed 'The Fry Chronicles', which took the story up to his 30th birthday and chronicled his initial success as a writer and performer. This became the UK's best-selling autobiography of 2010, so anticipation is at fever pitch for Fry's upcoming third volume, 'More Fool Me', which recounts his creative purple patch and the hard-partying excesses of the late Eighties and early Nineties. Broadcast live in HD from the Royal Festival Hall as part of the Southbank Centre's London Literature Festival, this unique event offers a sneak preview of the book's highlights performed in Fry's own inimitable style.  (plus)

Commentaire: By placing the London Philharmonic Orchestra in a pit in the middle of the stage, this production obliged the performers to confine the action to a narrow perimeter, restricting the dramatic momentum and creating a musical-concert hybrid – neither a purely concert-version, nor a staged production. However, the quality of the performers more than compensated, and the overall critical verdict was favourable.  (plus)

Commentaire: Accompanied by the London Philharmonia Orchestra, this was a semi-staged concert version performed in the newly refurbished Royal Festival Hall, combining the greatest Wagnerian voice of our age with one of the greatest West End performers of our time, and adding a thrilling chorus made up of students from the Guildford School of Acting. Unlike the earlier cut-down John Doyle version, this was given the full orchestral works. Bryn Terfel gave a hugely praised performance, as did Maria Friedman and the rest of the supporting cast. Accepting that a fully staged production is not possible in a concert hall, for many, this was a dream cast.  (plus)

Matthew Malthouse.

Commentaire: With three former Royal Ballet stars - Adam Cooper, Sarah Wildor and Irek Mukhamedov - this was a special treat, even allowing for restrictions imposed by staging it in a concert hall. In spite of the brilliant dancing display on offer, many critics felt Kathryn Evans stole the show.  (plus)

Commentaire: This was the “original” Broadway version as preferred by Sondheim, though several critics expressed their preference for the 1987 London version. It was given as a “proper” staging, though the restrictions of a 3,000 seat concert hall seemed to work against it. However, the performances of Kathryn Evans and Joan Savage were especially praised.  (plus)
